Here is a PBS special on a petrified wood outcrop. The breaking up the hard stone nearby to see what species it was is a thing. I don't know that I can embed the video here, but the link is not behind a paywall. Here the meta-sequoia go to modern sequoia along with all the other plants the Miocene had. Its funny the fossils down past Thousand Cr ranch going to Railroad Point are late Miocene and the ones up in the side of the Gooch Table are early Miocene. Kinda like the petroglyphs and artifacts go back many a civilizations worth. I have another link about the woods occasionally found up high not being silica replacements too.
