? Green Stone ID

Post by OpalSpectrum »

few weeks ago I've found this stone and I'm not sure what is it
first I thought its just serpentinite but it looks and feels different and it's harder
the stone is opaque and has dark green color
it's naturally semi-polished-tumbled by water > found on the beach of big 'lake' which actually it's huge gravel quarry
the gravel is 'plowed' from the bottom by barge

any idea  :?:

I have a couple of rocks about that color that I thought were only colored on the outside, likely by algae, but I actually have no idea why they're that color, or what they are. If you had 2 of them I'd suggest cutting one to see if the inside was the same color. :?

you right Pink its a bit like the algae stones and I've seen some > in my opinion it's different
KJ I didn't want to cut it because it's quite small ..but I guess there is no other option
I'll cut it & see what's inside

thanks

Yes, that's exciting that it's a solid color; whatever it is. How hard was it to cut? And is that tiny druzies peeking out from under the shadow in that last pic?? Do you have any gemological testing equipment? Can you do a scratch test to determine a ballpark on the hardness? Are there any gemologist jewelers who might do a specific gravity test on it? :?: ...inquiring minds, you know how it goes.

no I don't have any testing equipment
comparing to typical serpentinite (which is very soft) it's quite hard - although there are different types of serpentinite so maybe this is the 'hard type'
I did hard test by scratching it with russian nephrite - and it's hard to scratch it - also I tried to scratch the nephrite with the green stone and it makes similar mark on nephrite .. so I think the hardness is close to 6 ? but I'm not sure
