Mystery Box of Rocks - Help please! :)

Post by kjsspot »

On a whim I went ahead an ordered a mystery box from a fellow lapidary friend on FB. I'm not the best at IDing so please feel free to pitch in with ideas of what you think they might be.

Blue grey, a bit waxy looking. Host rock also has small dark crystals or mica or something.

Olivine crystals - hard to see in photo.

Very heavy. Ironstone? Pink crystals.

Pyrite I'm assuming

Does quartz come in long sprays like this?

I'm assuming graphite! :D

Garnet is my guess

At first I thought aquamarine but then I started thinking maybe blue topaz. I put a piece of quartz in front. The blue is very pale and shows more with a light.

Amethyst, looks black till you put the light in it.

Quartz, one with an inclusion of some kind. It's fuzzy.

This one, I looked at it and said... ya, ok. It's a rock. Then eventually I saw the red crystals. At first I thought ruby in Zoisite but I think it's garnet. Upon closer inspection it might have an orange hue.

This one... well... this one is a Popsicle... hehehehe

Wow KJ, what a score that was! You got some wonderful rocks there, but of course no one can say they're anything definitely because no testing can be done, but it sounds like you could be correct on all of them, and I love the geodes and mica. Nice haul!! :D

They flake too easily for garnet. I'm thinking Vanadinite.
