Perth Mint — Australia: New silver Proof coin in “Opal” Lunar series continues with design featuring the tiger
Image

Designed by Perth Mint artist Jennifer McKenna, the reverse design incorporates authentic Australian opal created as an inlaid tiger-shaped centrepiece. The colourful opal forms the depiction of the tiger in the coin’s inner ring set against a black background. The text above the main design reads YEAR OF THE TIGER with the year 2022 and the coin’s weight and fineness seen just under the tiger and to the left with the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark placed to the right. The outer ring in the design features an intricate patterning and stylised depictions of cineraria flowers — considered lucky for those born in the Year of the Tiger — and is surrounded by a circular, geometric East Asian style border. The coin’s obverse bears Jody Clark’s commonwealth effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II within a stylised pattern and the monetary denomination of 1 DOLLAR placed under the Queen’s likeness.

That's a beautiful coin John, thanks for showing it to us. When we were part of opalauctions Wayne sent me 2 of the Perth mint coins on two different Christmases; one with rough diamonds in a plastic insert embedded into the coin, and the other was the kangaroo done in infinitesimally small bits of opal, and I treasure both of them. That said, it was sad that our Jenador did such beautiful work in that medium with tiny bits of opal, that her work was shown in museums, but rather than contract with her for the kangaroo coin, they went to the Chinese, as they likely did with this one, and now, of course, Jen has passed away, so they missed a golden opportunity to have one of their own create their opal kangaroo coin. I still miss Jenador, and the owl piece she sent me is one of my most prized possessions, and holds a special place in my heart and my display cases. :)
