This video involves cutting a fantastic 83 ct opal cabochon, initially cut in 2014, but rejected because "It Looked Like Death," because of its gray background. (I kinda see a pair of deaths eyes in the clear spots)
A 7 1/2 ounce parcel of seam opal from Mintabie, South Australia was the starting material. I show how I cut one large piece from that parcel to make the 83 carat opal cabochon in 2014, then I re-cut that stone in 2021 to make a fantastic new cabochon, one of the finest that I have ever seen.
I also pan for gold at the end of the video

Wow, that opal was beautiful to begin with, so I don't think I would have been brave enough to cut it up, but the end results are fabulous. Thanks for sharing that with us John. :)

I cut opal from the Opal Valley field at Coober Pedy, S.A., Australia. Spectacular cabochon. I get a call from President Biden, who needs me for an important governmental job, and he wants my opal collection. He's not getting it .... not all of it!

LOL! He is so funny with his warped sense of humor, and that opal he cut is spectacular! I love the patterns in it, and the blocky splotches are almost harlequinesque. You gave us a jackpot of opal videos today John, so thanks so much! Much appreciated. :D
