The president of the opal Association recently unveiled the world first opal carpet. It consists of 400 Australian opals attached to a Kashmir carpet and framed. The opals are from all the main opal fields in Australia. There are black opals from Lightning Rdige nsw.Boulder opals from Queensland and white opals from Coober pedy .The feature stone is a 45.40 carat solid black opal from Lightning Ridge. The carpet will be displayed in local and over seas gem and jewellery shows.
A Kashmir Rug is a handmade oriental rug, that origins from Kashmir. It is woven flat without pile and entirely covered with embroidered patterns of colored yarns.

The simple answer is glue. ;)

But, they probably bezel set the opals. The bottom of the bezel would have had a flat plate (larger than the diameter of the opal) soldered to it (prior to setting the opal). This would be more than sufficient to keep the opal in place when woven into the rug.

I don't know if they did it this way, but this method would have worked well.

How did I miss this thread??! :o That carpet is spectacular, and when my ex and I had a restaurant in NY, we had a Persian rug place next door where they'd sit in the window and construct each carpet by hand, in the most beautiful and intricate patterns. Thanks for resurrecting this thread or I would have missed it, Nili. :)
