Rare "vivid pink" diamond could break sale record

"HONG KONG (Reuters Life!) - A rare, 5-carat pink diamond will be sold in Hong Kong this December by Christie's, which expects the stone to hover near world record prices, thanks in part to the buying prowess of top Asian jewelry collectors.

The stone, set in a so-called "cushion-cut" ring by famed jewellers Graff Diamonds, is expected to fetch between $5-$7 million, in reach of the current world auction record for a pink diamond -- a 19.66-carat stone that sold in Geneva for $7.4 million in 1994."

Only .035ct, haven't quite gotten the hang of macros with this camera, color's a clearer pink than the fushia-ish shown.

Hunting for Diamonds in the Rough
By JEMIMA SISSONS

Looking for an Alternative to Flashy Gems, Discerning Shoppers Turn to Black Stones and Natural Cuts

"When Sarah Taylor, a 27-year-old law graduate from London, received an engagement ring, she was more than a little shocked, and not only because her boyfriend proposed on a railway platform in northern Scotland on a rainy Monday morning in March.

"It was black -- a band of tiny black diamonds, set in black gold," Ms. Taylor said. "When I finally managed to compose myself and look at the ring, it was exquisite."..."

Going GaGa for Green

"Any fancy color green diamond is a rare treat to behold. Natural large green diamonds are almost unheard of. So attendees at Sotheby's November 17th auction in Geneva are in for a once in a lifetime glimpse. Up for bidding will be a 2.52 carat cushion shaped natural green diamond so rare no one can calculate what the market will bring for this beauty. Pre-auction estimates call for a price range between $3.1 to $5.1 million dollars..."

Uh ohhh....

Auction takes shine off red diamond

"The first auction of a red diamond in Australia was tipped to set a record price, but the extremely rare gem remains unsold.

The platinum ring holds a rare fancy purple-red diamond which weighs 82 points and is set between two blue diamonds, surrounded by a cluster of white diamonds.

Before the sale last night, Sotheby's Australia took calls from interested buyers in North America and throughout Asia.

The auction house was hoping the dazzling stone would fetch between $700,000 and $1 million, but the bidding started at $480,000 and only climbed to $490,000..."

I'm putting this here because the blue diamond is impressive, and the whites, although great, are just white. ;)

Some Like It Hot! Orange Diamonds Sizzle

"There are fancy colored diamonds and then there are the rarest of the rare. Certain hues found in natural colored diamonds almost never appear in any size whatsoever.
Take orange diamonds for example. I mean really, don't you wish you could take an orange colored diamond? But where are they? Merchants cannot deliver what nature does not create.

HOW THE COLORING OCCURS..."
