110 Carat Yellow Diamond Wins Record Price at Auction
By JCK Staff - Posted on November 16, 2011

"A much-talked-about 110.03 ct. fancy vivid yellow diamond called the Sun-Drop sold to an anonymous buyer for $12.4 million (11.3 million Swiss Francs) at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels Auction in Geneva on Nov. 15, setting a world record price for a yellow stone.

Strikingly, the previous record for a yellow stone was set just last month by the Vivid Yellow, a pear‐shape fancy vivid 32.77 ct. yellow diamond that sold for $6.5 million at Christie’s in October.

The VVS1-clarity Sun-Drop, cut and polished by Cora International, was exhibited earlier this year at London’s National History Museum and ranks as the largest known pear-shape fancy vivid yellow diamond in the world. (Fancy vivid yellow is the highest color grade for a yellow issued by the GIA.) The rough was discovered in South Africa in 2010. ...

...And that wasn’t the only record set at the Geneva auction: A very fine 12.01 ct. Muzo emerald ring sold for $1.4 million—a world record price per carat for an emerald—more than doubling its estimate. That buyer was also anonymous.

Other auction highlights:

* A rare cushion-shape 38.88 ct. diamond sold for $6.9 million.
* A fancy vivid blue 4.16 ct. diamond ring sold for $4.2 million to an anonymous buyer.
* A natural pearl and diamond necklace from Cartier in the 1930s sold for $3 million.

Looks like the economy isn't having nearly the same effect on some, as it is on others.

Australia's biggest pink diamond unearthed
YOLANDA ZAW, The West Australian February 21, 2012, 3:03 pm

"Australia’s biggest pink rough diamond has been unearthed in the East Kimberley.

The 12.76 carat sparkler which was discovered at the Rio Tinto Argyle mine is among the largest and most valuable pink diamonds in the world.

The rarest of diamonds, pink diamonds are known to fetch about $1 million per carat on the market.

The diamond which will be known as ..."

Fancy Blue Diamond Sets World Record at Sotheby's Auction
By Rob Bates, Senior Editor - Posted on April 20, 2012

"Two fancy colored diamonds sold for record prices at auction this week—and they were both bought by the same man.

At Sotheby’s New York Magnificent Jewels auction on April 18, Brett Stettner of Stettner Investment Diamonds bought a fancy blue diamond ring from Tiffany & Co. for $2.4 million, or $687,712 per carat. The 3.4 ct. VS1 marquise fetched the auction’s top bid and went for several times more than its high estimate of $500,000.

According to Sotheby's, that is a world record per-carat price ..."

Rare diamond fails inspection
PETER KERR, The West Australian May 19, 2012, 11:10 am

"Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without, the saying goes.

It is a particularly apt line for a rare pink diamond unearthed at Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine in February that was initially thought to be among the biggest and most valuable such gems in the world.

The 12.76-carat sparkler — on weight alone estimated to be worth $12 million — is now destined to be a Melbourne museum piece after cutting and polishing magnified a series of internal flaws, which are common to the fickle pink stones, rendering it less valuable.

Rio has tried to turn its disappointment into a virtue, by ..."

Here's another article on the pink beauty from the Argyle mine that's going to the museum. It's got great color and it's a shame it can't be cut, but leaving this one as is will best serve to show it off to the world. If I was a pink diamond, this is the color I'd want to be. :P

Largest ever pink diamond mined at Argyle to go on display at Melbourne museum

8.01ctUncuttablePinkArgyleDonated.jpg

"One of the largest pink diamonds ever discovered in Australia will not be set in jewelry, but rather be placed on public display. The 8.01-ct. stone, which was discovered last year at the Argyle mine in Western Australia and is said to be the largest-ever fancy pink stone uncovered at the site, has been donated by Argyle's owner, Rio Tinto, to Museum Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.

Argyle had intended making the diamond part of its annual pink tender, where given its size it most likely would have achieved the highest ever price paid. But the company discovered that it could only be partially cut and polished, and decided it should be kept intact and for posterity. ..."

Colored diamond bra gives Victoria's Secret a run for its money

" Colored diamond bra gives Victoria's Secret a run for its money

VictoriasSecretColoredDiaBra.jpg

It could be said that colored diamonds provide an uplifting experience to all those who wear them, although sometimes the element of lift is more mechanical than spiritual. Such certainly is the case with a specially fitted brassiere, set with 5,000 natural colored diamonds, which was created by a jewelry company based in Detroit, Michigan.

When Birmingham Estate and Jewelry Buyers decided to create its very pricey undergarment, it was aware that it was walking a trail first blazed by Victoria's Secret, the giant lingerie manufacturer, which in 1996 unveiled its first fantasy bra. Created annually, these gem-set bras first appeared in the company's catalog, but since 2001 they have been the highlight of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and have been worn at the events by some of the most prominent supermodels, including Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum, Karolina Kurkova, Tyra Banks, Selita Ebanks, Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller and Miranda Kerr.

To set its bra apart from Victoria's Secret's, Birmingham Estate and Jewelry Buyers decided to take the more classic jewelry route. While the jewels in Victoria's "Fantasy" bras are sewn into the fabric, the diamonds in Birmingham's million dollar bra are set in gold.

There's no fabric in it what so ever; it's just ..."

From the Gemewizard™ newsletter:

Rio Tinto adds blues and red to annual
pink diamond tender

RioTintoAddsBluNred2pinkTender.jpg

"Rio Tinto has announced the launch of its exclusive Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender with a new twist. The collection, which showcases 56 single pink diamonds, this time includes two red diamonds and 19 lots of blue diamonds.

The collection will be previewed around the world in September and October.

While Rio Tinto's Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia has consistently produced almost the world's entire supply of rare pink diamonds, it has sporadically produced blue stones as well. The 19 stones being offered were mined during the past two years, and are found in a section of the tender that has been called, appropriately, "Once in a Blue Moon."

This year's collection showcases several "hero" stones, which have been granted the privilege of a specific name. Among them is the Argyle Siren™, a ..."

Is the Era of Pink Diamonds Really Ending?
By Rob Bates, Senior Editor - Posted on October 12, 2012

"An article from Sky News talks about what it calls “the end of the pink diamond” era:

Australia's world-famous Argyle Pink Diamond source is trickling to a halt in what will be the inevitable end of an era for global luxury jewelry manufacturing, an industry specialist says …

'In another decade the Argyle Pink Diamond will emerge as the new Faberge egg, the thing jewelry myths are made of,” says British jewellery historian Vivienne Becker.

While the general media may be just now getting a whiff of this, some in the trade have noticed for quite a while.

“I've been talking about the end for several years,” says Gary Roskin of the Roskin Gem News Report. “This year's [Argyle pink] tender with its smaller than usual goods certainly puts us on warning that this could be the beginning of the end of the Argyle Pinks.”

“There is no question that the mine is being diminished,” agrees Alan Bronstein of Aurora Gems. “It’s reflected in the Argyle tenders. If one looks at the Argyle tender you can see a very, very subtle kind of movement into smaller, and less important stones. When I looked at the catalogs from 20 years ago, every stone was a killer. It was almost decadent. But the decadence of the Argyle tender has gone down considerably.”

All of which would seem to mean that pink diamonds—already an extremely rare item—will get ever rarer.

“I've always stated that if I were bidding—and could afford to hold—I would be bidding higher than predicted values, simply because of the finite nature of the mine,” says Roskin. “Once they are gone, their value will only go higher.”

But Bronstein takes a more guarded view, noting the market for the stones—like the gems themselves—has always been limited, and the market won’t be able to swallow ever-increasing prices.

Russ Shor, GIA senior industry analyst, predicts that ..."

East and West are fused in the Argyle Empress, a pink diamond and jade necklace

"The Argyle Empress, a stunning necklace created as a joint project by Rio Tinto Diamonds and the Hong Kong-based luxury jewelry retailer Chow Tai Fook, has been unveiled. It combines more than 43 carats of pink diamonds from Rio Tinto's Argyle mine in Western Australia with 33 rare imperial jade beads.

"'The Argyle Empress' is a celebration of two of the Earth's rarest treasures and is a perfect union between East and West, said Josephine Johnson, manager of Argyle Pink Diamonds. "This heirloom piece of jewellery is the first of its kind for the growing Chinese market and will take its place in history as a coveted masterpiece." ...
