Up to $10 million in diamonds were stolen from a midtown jeweler who admitted he left unlocked the safe in which they were stored, the Daily News has learned.

Jonathan Birnbach Thursday told police that on Wednesday afternoon he discovered $5 million to $10 million worth of diamonds were missing from the vault inside his business, J. Birnbach, Inc., located in a third-floor suite at 5th Ave. and 47th St.

Good to see you Art. I would venture to say that most jewelers leave the safe open during business hours for the sake of convenience, as did the one I worked for many moons ago, so they can't hold that against them and you'd think surveillance equipment would reveal who absconded with the ice and when. A daylight heist like that is pretty remarkable though and you have to wonder how long the diamonds were missing before they noticed they were gone.

I'm sure there are billions of "theft" still in inventory (or just let ride as evaporation on a "lot") that was not properly checked coming in or recently done too. I can see what a high overhead security from door to dollar can be and just put that employees and get big out of my head early.

Diamonds Stolen, Scratch That, Thrown Away at New York Store
Jonathan Birnbach thought he'd put three boxes of diamonds in his safe, according to reports—turns out, he left the boxes out, and workers had disposed of them

"On Dec. 9, Jonathan Birnbach discovered that $10 million in diamonds were missing from the safe in his New York City business, J. Birnbach, Inc.

According to initial reports, Birnbach put the jewels in the safe on Nov. 24. He reportedly told investigators that the safe was kept unlocked during business hours, and that the diamonds may have been taken by contractors working in the store.

However, the New York Post now reports that the diamonds, which were kept in old wooden boxes, had not been stolen from the safe, but instead were mistakenly thrown in the trash by employees. They didn’t end up in the landfill. Security footage reveals that a building security guard took the boxes out of the garbage, the newspaper says.
