So I posted on the other site and no one responded to my cries for help, it was like I was on the naughty step! Luckily Pink Diamond gave me some pointers and here I am!

As background I'm a hobbyist jeweller (though I sell some niche products as well) in Cornwall. I don't really use stones in my stuff but I do love opals and I've had a go at cleaning up some cheapo rough (using a mix of hand and foredom) off eBay with some success. I now have a lovely polishing machine (though nowhere permanent to keep it yet) and some more rough on the way.

Hoping to mine you for tips and info as I cut a stone for the daughter's 21st present.

First tip, expect to get poor from buying tools!

heh, I am already poor from buying jewellery tools and bullion! My rough came today and a little laser pointer for me to play with, so will try and get some pics up tomorrow (assuming I can find some daylight!)
