Well, I am wondering, is today the day I finally reach the opal? I have been taking a 1/8th to 1/4 inch of rock off at a time. Slow and steady working off the host until I can get to the opal inside.
Here is where I started:

This is my first experience at doing anything like this. I'm very excited, in case you couldn't tell. Do you remember your first time? I'd love to hear about it.
Is today the day?

You know, if there's a tile place near you, or a stone cutting place, you could have them cut your opals into slabs to see if there's anything in there. Would be a lot faster. Hope you find some pretty colors tucked away inside.

Re: Is today the day?
I didn't quite make it today. Will take some more work. But I got as close as I could. Will do the rest on my husbands lathe, which he is setting up as a grinder/polisher for me. I am shocked he is willing to share his lathe as his tools are his tools, but he sure is.
Here is where I got to today:
More colors showing through.
So close.
