Update: Bad Idea: Designer Marla Aaron Installs Jewelry Vending Machine in Brooklyn

Post by PinkDiamond »

At least she put her vending machine in a pretty secure place, but those showing up in airports seem like they're just begging to be robbed. :!:

If you had the money to do so, would you ever consider putting your pieces in a vending machine in a public venue? :?:

It will be interesting to see how his trend pans out when we start seeing statistics that will reveal how popular they become. ;)

Designer Marla Aaron Installs Jewelry Vending Machine in Brooklyn

"Jewelry designer Marla Aaron announced this week that she will be installing a vending machine in the Brooklyn Museum for the holidays, in a playful experiment that merges convenience commerce with luxury retailing.

The branded vending machine will debut at the museum this week or next and will be up through the holidays. It will carry select pieces from Aaron’s collection, which lends itself particularly well to a vending scenario: The designer creates jewelry-style locks, pendant style earrings, and other transformable “jewelry tools.” There will be seven products for purchase in the machine, ranging in price from $100 to $1,500.

“We created this vending machine as a new way to deliver an unlikely experience for our customers,” says Aaron. “It lets them find our jewelry in a place where they would not normally find it.” ... "

I don't find it attractive at all either, KJ, but apparently her machine is doing well, and she plans to revamp the video and the look of the case when she moves it to its next location, plus she upped the amount people can buy from it. As she moves it from place to place, she'll get a good idea of what areas are more receptive to buying from it than others, so this still should be interesting to follow and see what happens.

I got a kick out of them saying ancient Egyptians had vending machines that dispensed holy water, since we think man is so advanced now. Apparently not, although the methods of delivery have changed.

Marla and the Machine

Marla Aaron takes a seat in front of her vending machine in the Brooklyn Museum. Originally, Aaron planned to cap the price point of the merchandise in the machine at $500 but bumped it up to $1,500 after noticing her average online sale creeping up.

"If you had to guess, how long would you say vending machines have been around? Since the 1800s, or 1700s maybe?

According to a history of a vending and coffee service from NAMA, that is the National Automatic Merchandising Association, the ancient Egyptians had devices in their temples that dispensed holy water as early as 215 B.C.

In the United States, the government granted patents for coin-operated vending machines as early as 1886, and there were some dispensing gum on New York City subway platforms by 1888.

Fast-forward a few thousand years and vending machines are entering the conversation about the future of retail as they are being employed to dispense an ever-increasing variety of products.

Anyone who has passed through an airport in the past decade has seen the machines that sell electronics, like headphones and cell phone chargers, and cosmetics from brands like Benefit and Philosophy.

There are beach-side machines that sell flip-flops, and Japanese company Uniqlo started selling its clothes out of vending machines last year after plans to expand its physical footprint in the U.S. fell flat.

And now, inside a museum in what is inarguably New York’s hippest borough, a jewelry designer named Marla Aaron has a vending machine that dispenses her signature locks.

On a recent morning at the museum, I met with Aaron to see it and chat about why she sunk between $30,000 and ... "

This update on this vending machine says it's moving from a protected location at the museum, to an outdoor location, and the difference in the sales is being attributed to tourists, where the price point has been noticeably different. I hope the next update on the machine isn't about it being broken into by vandals, in this new outdoor location. :!:

Marla Aaron’s Vending Machine Finds a New Home

Jewels on wheels. A view of the Marla Aaron fine jewelry vending machine at its new home at The William Vale hotel.

"New York—Marla Aaron’s fine jewelry vending machine is on the move.

Late last year, the designer launched her ultra-creative retail endeavor, selling a small selection of her sterling silver and gold signature lock jewelry in a customized vending machine at the Brooklyn Museum.

Now, the machine has moved, not terribly far away but to an area with a distinctly different feel.

In late June, it appeared at the location that will be its new home through September, the park outside The William Vale hotel, an independent boutique hotel in Brooklyn’s trendy Williamsburg neighborhood.

“I wanted the next location of our vending machine to be outside,” Aaron explained, noting that the Japanese vending machines that originally inspired her concept are often found out-of-doors.

Aaron feels that such a novel retail concept resonates well with the denizens of Brooklyn.

“If it's interesting and new, whether it be food, fashion or music, it's happening in Brooklyn and The William Vale is at the heart of it,” she said.

Since it opened in 2016, The William Vale has become a major New York City tourist destination, not least for its spectacular rooftop views of the Manhattan skyline.

Perhaps those tourist dollars are the explanation for the machine’s sales so far.

“Interestingly, at the Brooklyn Museum the price point of what we sold was much lower. We mostly sold the silver pieces. Since launching at The William Vale the single most popular piece is the gold ‘Babylock’ on a chain that retails for ... "

I'm not surprised as I was not at commercials of "sponsors" on public radio. The curious want to know how much that space costs her per month. May have to raise her price point to 1,500 could be has to. Good luck to her, the market never sits still and a lot of jewellery is impulse bought, so if you can get to a sole place where emotions are in play you are up on the world.

Well, the verdict is in. I'm changing the title to reflect what we all knew, that this was a bad idea; not so much when she located her machine in the museum, but when she brought it out into the open air because that was like beckoning someone to steal from it, and now it has happened. I got a kick out of what the perp's shirt said on it. At least it was appropriate.

Man Steals $13,000 in Jewelry From Vending Machine
October 23, 2018 by Rob Bates

"When designer Marla Aaron set up a vending machine featuring her jewelry in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y., offering items ranging from $100 to $1,500, videos on her site proclaimed “it’s crazy to put jewelry in a vending machine.”

Unfortunately, that has proven all too true. On Sept. 20 at 1:15 p.m., a man (pictured) used fraudulent credit cards to purchase approximately $13,000 worth of jewelry from the machine. The New York City Police Department is now seeking his arrest for grand larceny.

Jewelers’ Security Alliance president John Kennedy says he’s not surprised that what JCK dubbed a “playful experiment” had gone wrong.

“The risks are tremendous,” he says. “You have the risk not only of fraud but also of burglary. People attack ATM machines. What is to stop someone from attacking that machine and stealing all the goods? It would be like leaving materials out in your showcase overnight.”

According to the New York Daily News, the vending machine, which was originally stationed in the Brooklyn Museum, has now disappeared from its outdoor spot in Vale Park in front of the William Vale Hotel. It featured a fully automated touch screen as well as a video that told the designer’s story.

Aaron clearly had considered the crime angle, but told Brooklyn Paper that the machine was protected by security cameras. ... "
