LOL! He's the lead singer and his own band, and sounds like a pileated woodpecker to me. Too cute, but not if you're trying to sleep inside the house.
I went out yesterday, and never saw the barred owl on a branch on this side of the sycamore down below, until I heard an owl call from the other side of the coop, and then the one on the tree in front of me began hooting back, and flew to the one I couldn't see. I'm delighted it's here, but it blends in with the forest so well that unless it makes a sound or flies, I don't notice it even when it's right in front of me ; albeit about 75' away, and another 75' up in the tree. Now if I could just find a baby on the ground like 8's did I wouldn't have to be jealous at all.

Owls are very territorial. Mimic its hoot and it will come over to see who else is in the hood. Toss it a mouse and it will head straight back to the nest. Now climbing the tree to count the owlets you need gauntlets, a helmet and bravery.

Thanks

Re: Early evening visitor
We have big flickers who come to pound on the edges of anything metal from April to June. Always during the early morning hours, too. Then they clean out the bird feeders - only taking the best kernels. Beautiful birds, though. Absolutely nothing was so bad, however, as when a pair of peacocks showed up one year. Their screaming was something on another level entirely.

If you're addressing that question to me, all I can say is, when you live with the forest all around you, nothing is really nearby since they apparently go deeper into the forest than we are willing to go. We have tried walking around searching for nests when the foliage was off the deciduous trees, but neither of us could find anything from our vantage point, nor do either of us want to go trekking around the forest with deer ticks everywhere.
