Pink skies just for me???!

I think it was Halloween night, but it could have been the night before, that I walked outside to a breathtaking pink sky that spanned the sky completely, in every direction I looked.

Needless to say I had to take pics to keep for posterity. I don't recall ever seeing this before.

Thats real unusual even in the land of Alpen glow I get everyday. Neat on your skies color. I wonder what exactly did it.

Pink Skies for EVERYONE this weekend if the Earths magnetic field is really falling off. Well auroras likely. These X flares today and the filament lifting CME that happened should make Saturday evening colorful way down towards the equator.

The speed depends on intensity and it does NOT look earth shattering. Not that Im up on the exact science of how the two relate, but smarter people than me are watching the numbers from all of these now.

Well, Things got worse: SIX solar storms are now headed our way and the first two have merged.

So the "pinks" due to the weakening magnetic field were seen down into Florida & Texas AS we got the biggest solar flare yet now on the way, an X 5.8 as we already have a Class 5 solar storm ongoing in this series as the sunspot group is turning off the disc. Last night was the most severe set of conditions in 21 years for satellites and the systems felt the strain. Tonight and the next two will also be GREAT aurora photographing opportunities with your skyline in the back ground. On a sad note, these events can usher in major earthquake or volcanic sequences in vulnerable areas.

I had forgotten all about that day so long about with the pink sky, and I haven't seen it since so I'm glad you resurrected this thread John. I pulled up the aurora cam last night but there was nothing, and it's like the land of the midnight sun up there at this time of year with the sun not even fully setting in the wee hours of the morning, but it looked clear yesterday and maybe it will be again tonight so at some point maybe the auroras can be seen over tonight and the next few evenings.

They even have pictures from the Caribbean online from last night and another is coming in tonight. May be later. Google pictures not just live cams also.

Yes, it's a real event when the auroras extend so far south with such vivid color. Here's what spaceweather.com posted yesterday.

"THE STORM IS NOT OVER: A CME hit Earth's magnetic field on May 10th, sparking the biggest geomagnetic storm in more than 20 years--an extreme category G5 event. It is subsiding now (currently category G2), but it is not over. More CMEs are expected to hit Earth's magnetic field during the next 24-48 hours, and they could push the storm back to extreme levels. CME impact alerts: SMS Text

AURORAS IN FLORIDA, PUERTO RICO, MEXICO: Many people around the world have just seen auroras for the first time in their lives. This includes residents of the Florida Keys. Ron Jarrell sends this photo from Big Pine Key at latitude 24.7° N:



"The auroras were so beautiful!" says Jarrell, who needed no more than his smartphone to photograph the display.

Seeing auroras in the Florida Keys is extraordinary, but the light show didn't stop there. Sky watchers saw the sky turn red across the Carribean. These pictures were taken from the southeast coast of Puerto Rico at latitude 18.1° N:

"The last events on record when auroras were seen from Puerto Rico were in 1859 and 1921, so tonight was an historic event", says Eddie Irizarry from the Sociedad de Astronomia del Caribe (Astronomical Society of the Caribbean).

Auroras also appeared in Mexico. René Saade photographed the display looking north from the beach in Mazatlan, Sinaloa at latitude 23.2° N:



"This is not something you see every day--auroras and palm trees," says Saade. "Amazing!"
