7.09 ct. Tanzanian Opal (+ 0.45 ct. Pallasite Peridot)

Post by PinkDiamond »

Have any of you seen or heard of Tanzanian opal before? I don't recall seeing any, and I know I've never seen an opal like this one being offered for a song by my friend Brad The Gem Trader, who I've dealt with and gotten quite a few gemstones from for years such as the rare, faceted pallasite form of peridot from outer space that travels to earth in meteorites; mine having iridescent needles showing across the face of the stone adding to its rarity, which I set in an earring. He's got another fabulous pallasite that's larger than mine and has even better color, although no iridescence, so I"ll show you that one here too even though I'm putting this in the opal category so we know where to find this unique Tanzanian opal again. Check these out and if anyone scores one of them let us know. 8-)

7.09 ct. Tanzanian Opal

* Color: Medium Yellow-Orange

* Clarity: Slightly Included

* Origin: Tanzania

* Cut: Rectangular Step

* Treatments: None

* Measurements: 18.9 x 10.2 mm

A new find - while these are cut as traditional faceted stones, they in fact have a distinct chatoyancy that would, had this been cabbed, been a cat’s eye. The resulting look is great - the stone has bands of sheen that run across the table when in motion. A billowy effect not unlike some Moonstone. Along with the bright bodycolor this makes for a visually interesting and unusual gem.

$30 / carat - $212 total

0.45 ct. Pallasite Peridot[

* Color: Medium Dark Slightly Yellowish-Green

* Clarity: Eye Clean

* Origin: Jepara Meteorite, Indonesia

* Cut: Oval Brilliant

* Treatments: None

* Measurements: 5.4 x 4.1 mm

A fine and bold example of the rarest form of gem Peridot - that which originates in the stony-iron meteorites known as pallasites. This particular fall, the Jepara meteorite, is well known as one of the few that has been capable of producing gem rough. As you might imagine, these have had quite a life and it is exceedingly rare for any gemmy sections to remain intact. The cutting and color here are superb, far above what is normal for a stone that is priced so high on a per-carat basis. Entirely eye clean, under 10x you will see a few of the fine needles that are diagnostic inclusions for Jepara. A fantastic gem and a great size for these. With lab report from GIT.

I have some opal rough from Tanzania. In both white and yellow, I'll have to look for it.
