" The unassuming button is an unsung hero of the clothing world.

Not that all buttons are demure. You could fill an entire museum with the assortment of buttons that have decorated clothing and other wearables (and they have).

You might not think twice about the buttons on your clothing, but if you look down, I’m nearly certain you’ll find at least one or two (unless, like me, you don’t know how to sew and some of your buttons are missing—oops). But many clothing creators do take their choices of button quite seriously, and this finishing touch is revered—collected, even—around the world. It’s almost the jewel of clothing, in a way.

So it makes sense that a button would make the perfect jewel. Pomellato knows this, utilizing the button in a signature motif that dates back to 1974.

Like other great jewelry houses that are paying homage to their heritage within their current offerings, Pomellato, founded in Milan in 1967, is doing so with Pom Pom Dot, a new line of double-sided jewels inspired by one of the jeweler’s early designs.

Unsurprisingly, buttons look positively grand rimmed in gold, and Pomellato’s renditions in green malachite, gray and white mother-of-pearl, and diamonds are especially a treat. The pendants on Pom Pom Dot’s necklaces and bracelets are reversible, allowing you to display whichever side strikes your mood: pavé diamonds or white mother-of-pearl on one button; malachite or white mother-of-pearl on another; or one combining gray mother-of-pearl and white mother-of-pearl. The “thread” running through the buttonholes is either gold or diamond-studded, and each necklace and bracelet has a chain in 18k rose gold.

An adorable selection of button earrings (a literal interpretation of button earrings!) is also available, in malachite or mother-of-pearl with diamond-accented “thread” and pavé diamonds with gold.

“Every stone in the collection is associated with a powerful, positive force, symbolizing Pomellato’s joyful spirit,” the brand says in the collection’s notes. “Malachite emanates a harmonious energy that promotes inner peace and hope. Diamonds bring courage and strength. White mother-of-pearl is associated with well-being and protection, while gray mother-of-pearl reflects qualities of wisdom and patience.”

The collection made its U.S. debut on April 2. Prices range from ... "
