BLM plans new wild burro gather near Oregon border The BLM says the gather will take place on or around March 18, 2024
Dateline DENIO:

These are what those corral like things are by the springs. These would be the burritos that range to Gridley lake where you stop at the Devils Faucet Hot Springs or turn east to go up Knott Creek reservoir AKA tree line. They are probably getting the ones I trained to get out of the road if they hear me coming.

Its the old single ones you have to watch out for; like bull camels. These are your hot springs buddies you pass going in.

There is only one road up over McGee mtn & Big Mtn which goes off to the right before you get to Gridley lake. It either comes out at the Onion Reservoir to the Black Rock Desert (or Highway 140 at the rest area) once you hit the old Desert Corridor Trail south or the Swordfish Mine on Sagebrush Creek Rd if you go north & out at the campground either way.

DENIO JUNCTION, Nev. (KOLO) - The Bureau of Land Management says they will be conducting a wild burro gather in Humboldt County near the Oregon border.

On or around March 18, a wild burro gather will take place on and around the McGee Mountain Herd Management Area, located around 24 miles southwest of Denio Junction in Humboldt County.

BLM says they will be using temporary bait and water traps, and that no helicopters will be used.

The herd management area consists of approximately 41,160 acres of public and private lands, and can support between 25-41 burros, according to the BLM. Staff plan to gather and remove around 22 excess wild burros.

The most recent gather in this area was in 2015, when the BLM removed 115 excess wild burros. BLM says the purpose of this gather is to prevent degradation of public lands associated with excess burros.

Burros removed will be transported to the Palomino Valley Off-Range Corrals in Reno. The burros will be checked by a vet and readied for BLM’s adoption program.
