A Rose (de France) by Any Other Name: Light Amethyst Jewelry

Rose de France is a lovely pale amethyst that looks good on anyone, and they have some lovely pieces in this one, but there are two very unique rings; the one in the lead pic with the gemstones extending out on both sides of the ring, which would appear to rest on the fingers beside it, and the Maryam ring with amethysts in a ring around a rose de France center stone that hovers above the finger, so I like them for their uniqueness, but wouldn't buy any of these. The last one is so gross to me I left it for any of you brave enough to see it via the link. :lol: My issue with it is that it's in sterling silver, and I don't see much of the rose de France color in the gemstones which look more clear/white than pale lavender. Check these out and see what you think of them. ;)

"There are a lot of things to love about amethyst—its dreamy hues, the fact that it’s just as readily found in jewelry as it is in home decor (geode bookends for the win!), and how you can get a sizable cocktail ring for a modest price.

One variation of amethyst that has always piqued my interest in particular is rose de France.

This is not what many experts would consider an “official” stone: Search GIA for the name and you’ll find no mention of it. But the moniker is used to describe amethysts of a lighter lilac color, sometimes almost pinkish in appearance. The problem is, it’s a fairly ambiguous descriptor, with no official boundaries or guidelines for grading. As such, I tend to think of it more as a synonym for the color, as in “These amethysts are very rose de France-y.”

“I think rose de France is a commercial name rather than anything else, but I find it so chic,” says designer Katerina Marmagioli, whose ring is pictured at top. “Pricewise, it is like a massive pink-purple sapphire but at a fraction of the cost.”

While a number of designers and gem lovers that I spoke to about rose de France chalked it up to a marketing term, Gemporia, a gemstone sourcing business and jewelry retailer, offers more insight: “Essentially the stone must be dichroic [two-color], which is extremely rare in amethyst,” reads an article about rose de France on the company’s website. one of the few sources I could find that discusses rose de France in detail.

“Most amethyst is colored by the presence of iron. The greater the quantity of iron, the deeper the tone of the resulting amethyst…. For rose de France amethyst, the relative proportion of iron molecules must be much lower,” explains the Gemporia website. “To be certified a rose de France stone, the gem must have SI clarity as a minimum standard.”

While there’s always room for controversy when it comes to ill-defined labels, this doesn’t exactly rank among pressing industry issues (like, say, lab-grown versus natural diamonds). And it’s easy to see why brands and designers love rose de France: A soft lilac that, as Marmagioli mentioned, almost resembles a purple sapphire is compelling for consumers, too. These rose de France—or simply, light amethyst—jewels will draw a crowd.

I was taught a lesson in thinking gemstones were all they seemed to be after displaying them in the sun and weather for a few years. The cutest blues and purples can be quite transient or go the other way get much richer after irradiation, by reactor or the Sun. I had some Brazilian Amethysts stay at 5 a ct due to the color fade over the years despite the price increases. Ive never seen people displaying the vugs outside to see if they fade? Nothing was ever posted on any table about color going away in the sun.

No, you're right it's not something vendors talk to the public about so it's not common knowledge, but people in the trade are usually aware of it and shield their susceptible gems from the sun. I keep one blind closed in here because my specimen cases are in front of the window which gets glaring afternoon sun from the west before it slips behind the mountain. That blind is only opened if it's an overcast day or I'm showing someone the specimens for a brief period of time before it's closed again. Amethyst is notorious for bleaching out in sunlight; not usually the other way around and getting richer color. Other stones can lose their color too, but I've never heard of them gaining color and would love to see before and after pics of that. Thanks for mentioning this so our members are aware of it. :)

Anyone who has an interest in gemstones and a passing knowledge of the trade will know that there exist many forms of treatment and enhancement devised by man to make lower grade gems look better. Sometimes, these treatments can transform a gemstone completely.

Some treatments are permanent, others are not. Some are accepted as normal practice in the trade and are a routine part of a gem type’s route to market and others are unscrupulous attempts to misrepresent lower grade gemstones as fine pieces. This article will take a look at two of the most common forms of treatment, heating and irradiation.

Heating
This is a treatment that has been used for centuries. It is one of the oldest and most common treatments. History tells us that people in India were heating dull yellow chalcedony to produce bright orange carnelian as early as 2000BC.

Heat can lighten, darken, deepen or change a gemstone’s color entirely. It can eliminate inclusions or it can form them. It all depends on a number of factors including pressure, temperature, rate of heating and cooling and chemistry.
Heat usually affects a material’s color by altering the chemical state of some of its atoms and thus its light absorbing pattern, but it can also change appearance in other ways.

Some of the more commonly heated gemstones and the impact of heat upon them are:


Amber : Gentle heating oxidizes and darkens Amber. Some Amber also contains gas bubbles that can make it appear cloudy. The bubbles can be removed by slow heating, generally whilst immersed in rape or linseed oil. Additionally, heat can be used to produce tiny fractures called sun spangles” in the trade. This is done by heating bubbles within amber to a point where they implode making discoid fractures which reflect light causing a “spangled” effect.

Beryl : The blue-green variety of Beryl - Aquamarine is a routinely heated gemstone. Color in Aquamarine is caused by iron impurities and it generally has 2 colors – yellow and blue. The 2 colors together make green which is why most unheated aquamarine is a greenish blue color. Heating to approximately 400 degrees centigrade will remove the yellow, leaving just the blue. The change is caused by an alteration in atomic structure, namely F3 molecules becoming F2 molecules.

Corundum : Heating of corundum, notably Ruby and Sapphire varieties is a widespread and common occurrence. Unlike Beryl it is not usually done to enhance color as such, but transparency, and it is not an atomic change but a structural one. Heat causes structural changes in “silk” inclusions in ruby and sapphire. The rutile which forms the silk dissolves into the stone at high temperature (usually around 1800 degrees centigrade). Leaving a more transparent and therefore more beautiful gemstone. A large percentage of ruby and sapphire on the market today is heated and it is a fairly routine treatment. Unheated rubies and sapphires will contain microscopic rutile needles or tiny gas bubbles in pockets of liquid which are evidence that laboratories can use to guarantee that these stones have not been heated. If these gems are the finest color they will command premium prices due to their extreme rarity.

Topaz : Brown/Orange Topaz is routinely heated to produce Pink Topaz. This is also mostly a structural effect. Heating repairs crystal structural damage, reducing the yellow component, and turning the topaz pink.

Tanzanite: Tanzanite is an interesting case as the blues we know and love would not exist without heating. It is assumed that all Tanzanite is heat treated. Tanzanite before heating resembles treacle in color. It is a strongly trichroic gemstone with 3 colors - reddish-violet, blue, and yellow-green all combining to produce a brown treacle-like hue. The yellow-green component is removed with heating at 600 degrees centigrade, resulting in the blue or purple final color. The treatment in permanent and stable.

Heating is not a color enhancer in Tanzanite’s case. As with all gemstones. the deeper the color saturation the finer the stone. So the more "washed-out" or pale the color in Tanzanite the lesser the grade. The color saturation is present even in its rough unheated form - a deep molasses like color will heat to a deep blue or blue violet. A pale brown will heat to a pale blue. Hence the heating process does not improve the color in Tanzanite, it simply changes it from brown to blue. The color quality is dictated by nature.

Heating can be carried out in a wide range of methods and with even wider variety of equipment. In Thailand and Africa for example, stones are routinely heated in oil drums in the case of corundum or even in foil and plaster of paris over a gas burner or in test tubes in the case of Tanzanite! More advanced gem dealers use sophisticated Gem Ovens which control the rate and temperature of heating to a high degree.


Irradiation
Irradiation is the process of using electromagnetic radiation to alter a gem’s color. Irradiation has been with us since the early 1900’s when scientists like Bordas and Crookes used radium salts to change blue sapphires and diamonds green.

In today’s world, irradiation is routinely used to color a number of gemstones. Most notably, Diamonds, Beryl, Pearls, Topaz, Yellow Sapphire, Amethyst and Tourmaline. The process by which irradiation changes color is fairly straightforward. Radiation causes electrons to be knocked off some atoms, leaving them free to be absorbed by others. This has the effect of creating “color centers” which in turn alter the light-absorbing pattern of the gemstone and by extension its color.

Generally it is gamma rays from radioactive elements such as cobalt which labs use to irradiate gemstones. Gamma rays leave no residual radioactivity. Radium by contrast, does and is hence dangerous to human health. Radium irradiated gemstones are very rarely seen these days and are usually throwbacks from early experiments. With Gamma Irradiation, the gemstones are usually put into a lead container with radioactive material such as cobalt or cesium, and left there until the color change is achieved.

So what effect does irradiation have on different gemstones? Irradiation of blue topaz has created shades not found in natural blue topaz, like London and Sky Blue. Tourmaline can be irradiated to darken pink stones into red ones; these are indistinguishable from natural red ones. Off-color diamonds (browns and brown-yellows) can be irradiated and heated turning them into intense yellows, greens, blues, pinks and browns. Irradiated diamonds are valued far less than their natural counterparts of comparable color, clarity grade, and size. Irradiating cultured pearls results in blue or grey overtones.

Crystals That are Not Okay in the Sun

Here are some of the stones that should be kept for only a short time in the sun with partial shade, if at all, for a quick five-minute charge. Or better yet, charge them under the full moon, even if it’s cloudy.
Amegreen - The color will fade when in sun too long. Made up of amethyst and prasiolite (green amethyst)
Amethyst - A member of the quartz family. Color will fade in the sun since the color comes from the iron in it.
Ametrine - The color will fade when in sun too long. Made up of amethyst and citrine.
Apatite - The color will fade in the sun.
Apophyllite - Can become brittle in the sun and color can fade.
Aquamarine - Direct sunlight will fade the blue to white if kept too long.
Auralite 23 - Primarily composed of amethyst, so it can fade.
Aventurine - A member of the quartz family and can fade in color.
Beryl - Can fade and get brittle in the sun.
Calcite - Can fade and get brittle in the sun.
Celestite - The blue will turn to white in the sun and get brittle and possibly break.
Chrysoprase - A member of the quartz family, it’s a green chalcedony, and it can fade or get brittle and crack.
Citrine - Since it’s a form of quartz, it will fade to a clear color within 4 hours in the sun
Clear Quartz - Can only withstand about 2 hours in the sun. Can get brittle and crack or break.
Fluorite - No more than 15 minutes in the sun. Gets very hot.
Hiddenite - The color will fade.
Kunzite - Will fade to white if kept in the sun too long.
Opal - Will lose its color in the sun. But okay in water.
Prasiolite - This is a green amethyst, and the color will fade.
Rose Quartz - Will fade in color in the sun.
Sapphire - Will lose whatever color sapphire it is.
Spirit Quartz - Will fade in color and clusters could ignite if in the sun too long.
Smoky Quartz - Loses its color to become grey or brown
Super Seven - Will fade in color.
Topaz - The color will fade when kept in sun for more than 8 hours. A yellow topaz will turn brown and a deeper color topaz will turn maroon.
Turquoise - Color can fade in the sun and be careful with time in water.
Unakite - Colors can fade in the sun.

Crystals Okay for Sun

There are crystals that won't fade in the sun when charging for a few hours, but be mindful of crystals with faceted points in clusters because they can heat up and ignite a fire. And some crystals when left too long will get brittle and crack or break. It is best to have partial shade when leaving your crystals in the sun. Below are some of the crystals that are safe in the sun for a few hours of charging and won’t fade.

Black Obsidian - The color won’t fade because of its dark color and it’s actually a glassy volcanic rock.
Black Onyx - The color is dark and won’t fade.
Carnelian - The orange stones are generally okay in the sun.
Howlite - No pigment color to fade.
Jade
Labradorite
Lapis Lazuli
Moonstone - Usually charged under the moon, but when charged in the sun it can be balanced with masculine-feminine energy.
Morganite
Malachite
Sunstone - Orange stones are generally okay in the sun.
Tourmaline
