"We are in full-on holiday mode as the end of October nears, and social media makes up a good chunk of businesses’ planning for the season. While the latest news doesn’t offer any magic tips on how to strategize, it does tell us two things: The younger generation is about to have one fewer app to spend time on, and jewelers will soon have a new way to engage with their followers (perhaps just in time for the holidays?). Gas runs out of gas
The Gen Z social media platform Gas, which let users give anonymous compliments to their classmates (and which JCK reported on last October), is no more.
Gas had reached 1 million daily active users in two days after its launch, but in recent months its growth stalled. The once-popular app was acquired by Discord back in January for an undisclosed sum, reportedly just for its engineering talent, so the news may not come as much surprise to those in the know. Gas officially shuts down on Nov. 7, leaving a space for social media apps designed specifically to boost confidence and enhance positivity—because not many exist.
Instagram introduces polls in comments
Instagram is testing its popular polls function in the comments section with select users. The feature would allow people to create and respond to polls in comments of feed posts and Reels—a huge engagement opportunity for brands on the app.
Polls are currently available only in Stories and DMs, so adding them in comments could be a great way to get users’ opinions on products, events, and more, and they wouldn’t disappear within 24 hours like in Stories (or kept private in DMs).
