I bet they are. The wood surface is different from the bone surface. Its common they are partially replaced with some internal structures intact also if nothing else than the surfaces. They can be completely empty holes or almost solid wood before replacement with the opal. Our favorites are rainbow spectrum but each tiny cell is the color, or conk which has a cellular appearance but smooth walled not jagged like marrow.
One from Virgin Valley. Contour polishing to do them like fire agates is the most impressive. This one is just a slab cabbed.

Now that looks like marrow on bone. I wish i had any that grade of brightness, or even precious. Maybe its a coral or something, but that is what i meant by angular or rough edged holes.
