I went to the original photo and enlarged and cropped it to focus on the area the arrow's pointing to, mehoose, and to me it does look like some weeds that have turned dark brown.

And yes, we do have snakes here, mostly garter snakes, blacksnakes that get over 4 feet long, and coppherheads that I've had to deal with. A copperhead came on the deck and bit my Bengal cat Schuyler in the face years ago, and her face swelled up but she survived it. I've seen the blacksnakes climb the house to get birds nests up near the gutter, and they'll even get in the gutter if something's alive in it. Between the snakes and the ticks, that's why I don't go out into the yard when he fails to mow it.
