Wavellite Value, Price, and Jewelry Information

Post by PinkDiamond »

There are some gorgeous specimens in this article from the International Gem Society, as well as all the properties of wavellite, and comments on cutting, etc. I love wavellite since it's native to this state, and I think its radial aggregates and botryoidal formations are beautiful. I'll show you my favorite, and you can also see other formations, colors, and one is set in jewelry. I can't imagine trying to cut one of these things. Enjoy! :)

This striking specimen displays massed, acicular, “needle-like,” crystals radiating from the center of the stone. You can also see how one “ball” of wavellite grew around another. “Wavellite,” 3.4 x 2.0 x 1.1 cm, Avant Mine, Avant, Garland Co., Arkansas, USA. © Rob Lavinsky, http://www.iRocks.com. They got the Arkansas locale wrong. Actually it is Mauldin Mt. in Montgomery County, rather than Hot Springs. Some beautiful pieces come from there. It looks beautiful in the gems shown, but it is definitely one of those that you'd have to handle and store very carefully.

Wavellite also forms some of the "eyes" in the rare and very expensive Clay Canyon variscite from Fairfield, Utah:
