"Mother’s Day is coming up, and there are so many opportunities to make jewelry extra-personal for the maternal figures in customers’ lives. I love all of them, from the engraved to the gemstone-dotted and beyond.
But Ceci Leibovitz offers a different option entirely, utilizing lace or a customer’s choice of fabric for a custom order. Of course, the designer’s pieces are suitable for a meaningful everyday self-purchase (and beyond), but they’re some of the most beautifully creative ideas for gifting this season.
Using antique lace—either from the designer’s own collection or from fabric supplied by a customer (many choose a piece of their wedding dress)—Leibovitz creates a wearable keepsake framed in 24k gold–plated pewter.
I love the designer’s pieces for their utter romanticism, along with their highly accessible price point. They offer a wide variety to choose from, with colorful silk and hand-painted backgrounds and different shapes. Albeit somewhat niche, pieces that incorporate non-jewelry materials are excellent finds, and Leibovitz’s use of lace lends itself to jewelry beautifully.
Of course, styles like this absolutely bring wedding gifts to mind (think of incorporating a mother’s old wedding dress into a piece for her daughter to wear on her wedding day), but the possibilities for Mother’s Day abound. I imagine a piece of my daughter’s outfit from the day we brought her home from the hospital forever memorialized, or a shred of fabric from her first birthday. It’s as sentimental as it gets—not normally my way to be, but so irresistibly pretty as to make it a no-brainer way to preserve something precious that is otherwise sitting in a bag in a drawer somewhere.
