From the ISG and Chatham gems, here's a downloadable photo of a flux-melt ruby that you can save for reference. :)

While most are used to the mass-produced and low-cost flame fusion created rubies, created rubies using the flux melt process are far more natural looking and far more difficult to identify, unless you have studied with the ISG. Below you see the residual flux inclusions in this flux melt ruby, a diagnostic identification tool to help you with your gem identification. Notice the formation is unlike natural occurring inclusions in earth mined rubies. This residual flux material, along with a very low iron content making these rubies highly fluorescent, are strong indicators of flux-melt origin for the gemologist who knows what to look for.

And you do not need high cost equipment. These images were taken with the ISG Student Microscope seen inset in the photograph. Available from the ISG Bookstore at the link below.
