California caves first as campaign to ban crocodile watch straps bites

Post by PinkDiamond »

California strikes again. You'd think crocs never died naturally, or were not consumed by some cultures, the same as beef or any other edible critter, and it's not like the whole world is clamoring for watch straps made of croc hide (I know I've never wanted one), so what is this really going to accomplish, other than to drive more people and businesses out of the state from which people are fleeing in droves, just like NY where insanity also rules these days? Sadly, the 3rd comment below the story mirrors what I've been hearing for years now. :?

"Victory! declared PETA, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals protest movement, as California imposed a ban on the sale of exotic skins in September.

The law states that all products using skins from alligators and crocodiles must be removed from sale on January 1, 2020.

Legislators and animal rights protesters probably had luxury fashion conglomerates houses like Hermès and Louis Vuitton in their sights when the ban was considered, but the watch business has been affected and, according to brands and retailers speaking to WatchPro this week, the process of replacing croc and alligator straps is in chaos.

The use of exotic skins has been controversial for many years, and the fashion houses have been reacting in different ways. Chanel has banned their use outright, while LVMH has stated it will only use exotics from ethical sources.

Selfridges in London said earlier this year that it will ban the sale of exotic animal skins such as alligator, crocodile and python from February 2020.

A major luxury watch retailer in California, who asked not to be named, says he wishes the brands had lobbied the governor of California more effectively, but is now dealing with the consequences of the ban.

The process has not been smooth. “Brands are ... "

When did crocodile again become legal to import? I recall the first bans on Crocodile being 30 years ago or so. Products from Crocodilian species are still listed as restricted or banned for international trade on CITES ban list. Some threatened US alligator species have been delisted, but only able to be traded domestically within the US. Like the problem with conflict diamonds, there has yet to be designed or adopted an adequate system for tracking skins to ensure they are legal. Seems like California's law was just an attempt to plug a loophole that fraudsters were using to pass on illegal products by masking them as from farmed animals or legal species - same loophole that has been used by poachers to sell illegally harvested elephant ivory, rhino horn, and similar banned products into the international marketplace (and leading to a continuing illegal harvesting and crash in the populations of those species).

So i guess the florida python hunters can just let the animals carcasses rot...
same with other areas in which there are too many of the various critters
i wonder how many women and pet animals have to be dragged away on a golf course or children from disney land?

Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program

SNAP uses contracted nuisance alligator trappers throughout the state to remove alligators from locations where they are unwanted or unwelcome. If a complaint meets the qualifying criteria, SNAP will issue a permit to a contracted nuisance alligator trapper authorizing the removal of the animal.

Complainants must be able to grant legal access to the property on which the alligator is located. SNAP does not permit the removal of nuisance alligators from private or publicly managed property without first obtaining permission from the property owner or management authority.

In 2018, SNAP received 14,739 nuisance alligator complaints resulting in the removal of 8,139 nuisance alligators.

Removing Pythons in Florida
The Burmese python is an invasive species which negatively impacts native wildlife in and around the Everglades ecosystem in south Florida. The FWC is encouraging the public to help manage this nonnative constrictor.

Pythons can be humanely killed on private lands at any time with landowner permission - no permit or hunting license required - and the FWC encourages people to remove and kill pythons from private lands whenever possible.

The FWC wants the public to help remove invasive species such as the Burmese python and has removed obstacles to killing pythons year-round. Burmese pythons and other nonnative reptiles may be humanely killed without a permit or hunting license at any time throughout the year, except by use of traps or firearms (unless provided for by specific area regulations) on the following Commission-managed areas. Do not enter areas posted as “Closed to Public Access.”

maybe they can chop them up and feed them to the crocodiles?

A 3-Legged Alligator Followed a Woman Home from Golf Course, Sat Outside Her House for Hours
A Florida woman got what has to be a pretty terrible omen the other day. The sort of thing that would cause some ancient Egyptians, Native Americans, or Greeks to absolutely shun the person it happened to out of fear that they might end up too close to whatever calamity ends up befalling the newly cursed person.

A 3-legged alligator plodded slowly and directly toward the woman as she played golf near her home in Bonita Springs, Florida. Then the gator followed her home and just sat outside her house. For hours. Staring inside. Both her home and her soul (probably). If that’s not a metaphor for impending death I don’t know what is.

no word on whether the animal swallowed a clock or if the woman was related to captain hook, Wendy or the lost boys

Also on the rise are wolf attacks, cougar attacks, bear attacks (please stop hugging them), and others..
