Wish the contest was going longer. I'm gonna hate to see it end.

I used to call this pattern Burning Fire as in fireplace flames, but I guess its now defined as plume.

It may have been called Burning Fire, but after the news got out about Marc's opal with the iron oxide plumes in it that I posted on page 6 viewtopic.php?p=10401#p10401, when we started discussing it on the old forum, I began calling them plumes since that's what they looked like to me, and everyone pretty much followed suit since mixing terms in the thread would have been confusing.

I also sent it to the ISG, asking Robert James to use his lab equipment to tell us what caused the plumes, and since that's what I called them, they naturally carried on with it, and the phrase got passed on again and again, until all these years later and it appears it may have supplanted the Burning Fire description, in which case, if that's so, WE started the name trend for these rare formations in the industry! :!:

Pink, we''re famous!

Is the contest a vote or a judging?

Neither. Just a random pick of top 3 closest numbers, based upon the Dow Jones Industrial Average at closing on June 8. I should be able to post the results late tomorrow night (I have guests which will delay me, so it won't be when the stock exchange bell rings the close).

Per the contest rules, the winners are determined by the close of the Dow Jones Industrial Average today (June 8). The close was 21,182.53 and with under 100 entries, the last 2 whole numbers, reversed ("28") determines the winners. The winners are thus:

First prize: kjsspot (entry 31)
Second prize: m76steve (entry 24)
Third prize: KKHK (entry 23)

PM's are going out to the winners to claim their prizes (let me know if any of you winners do not receive your PM). Thanks everyone for playing - it was wonderful seeing all the photos!
