Landslide at Jade Mine Kills 170+ in Myanmar

This is horrific, and very sad because there were warnings about working with the weather so bad, but when people need to feed their families they take chances, and in this case, so many lost the bet. :(

"Yangon, Myanmar—More than 170 people died and many others were trapped after heavy rains caused a landslide at a jade mine in Kachin State in northern Myanmar Thursday morning.

According to a post on Facebook from the Myanmar Fire Services Department, as of Sunday 174 bodies had been recovered and another 54 people found injured as rescue operations continued through the weekend.

The fire service said the jade miners were “smothered by a wave of mud” after a pile of mining waste collapsed amid heavy rains, burying the miners.

According to the BBC, local police said a warning had been issued on Wednesday not to work in the area due to weather dangers.

Heavy rains also made rescue efforts difficult, and photos accompanying the fire service’s post on Facebook show emergency workers trudging through large amounts of mud as they and others carry bodies up unstable slopes.

The incident, which occurred in the jade-rich Hpakant area, is the latest in a series of deadly accidents at jade mines in Myanmar over the past few years.

Last year, more than 50 workers were buried in a mudslide at a jade mine in Hpakant after a lake collapsed. In 2015, ... "

RIP all the victims and hope the survivors get some relief. For a fact; a lot of the dead ended their heroin addiction the fast way.

Why Obama removed the sanctions for human rights abuses after that bright idea failed in China and let the rubies and jade loose to be openly sold to support the corrupt government, as we are only discussing them at this point, is byond American voters. He is a multi millionaire as he left office.

Miners’ testimonies reveal a destructive environment in the community around the mines, with endemic heroin addiction, high rates of HIV and the commercial sexual abuse of women and girls.

One miner says heroin is sold “openly, just like selling a movie ticket” in Hpakant, and that a friend of his disappeared for years without a trace. “One day he came and found me. His whole body was swollen,” he adds. “I asked him not to use it but he said that he couldn’t control himself any more. He’s dead now.”

“There are no jobs in Hpakant for women except for working as a maid or in a massage parlour,” says a 26-year-old woman living in the community. “The parlours are fronts for brothels, and many, many women are sexually abused.”

Another simply adds: “My understanding is we have no government control.”
