Agate, Jasper & assorted cabs.

Post by jakesrocks »

It was suggested by Pink that we start a thread here for general cabs of any material other than precious opal, So here goes. I'll lead off with a Woodward Ranch red & black plume.

Plume from unknown location.

So often the end nubs after slabbing get thrown in a bucket to feed a rock tumbler. Look them over before discarding them.
A couple of Montana Moss agate end nub cabs. Forgive the few edge chips. That's the nature of the beast when working with end nubs.

Another Montana Moss. I call it The Heart Of Montana for obvious reasons. Look closely and there appears to be a chicken walking inside of the heart.

Don't be afraid to try non conventional materials. I've always wanted to find an ancient piece of Damascas steel sword blade to cab. But for now this piece of Desert Iron Wood will have to do.

Kramer Junction golden agate from California.

That's it for now. Jim & other cabbers, lets see them.

Couple more cabs I found pics of.

Chacedony from east of Ludlow, Ca. South side of old Rt. 66. (Hector Siding location).
Image

Oolite from an unknown location. I inherited several large chunks when my rockin mentor passed away.
Image

Silver onyx from the old pit east of Calico Ghost Town, Ca.
Image

I didn't cut this one. It was cut by an old friend, Jake Schmitt. A master opal cutter who passed away a few years ago. RIP Jake. You were a true friend, and a real opal artist.

Nice ones. I just swept everything off my desk into a qt storage baggie again so I could remove my Genie wheels to be refinished. For the price I figured I would try the Johnson brothers. Need to go look at grits again. I need a new 220 hard and 280 600 1200 & then I need to decide what next; the original 14k or instead go to 3000 or 6000 (?) and flat discs/leather on the end
