Peretti Finds a Needle in a Haystack

Post by PinkDiamond »

Although I found this in Ron Ringsrud's Emerald News, it's about an astonishing find; an unknown lizard skull encased in amber. Much thanks to Ron for sharing this story, and as always, his permission to post his newsletters here for you. What a fantastic find! 8-)

New find is a one-in-a-million

"Overachiever Adolf Peretti not only has a mineral named after him (Perettiite-Y), but now has a new species of ancient animal named after him, whose bones were found in a small piece of 100 million year-old amber from northern Myanmar; Yaksha Peretti.

Let’s say a haystack has a million pieces of straw. Then you throw a needle into it. How long will you search before you find that needle? When a new discovery of ancient amber was found in northern Burma, it was validated and confirmed to be over 100 million years old. That meant that any animal or insect found in such amber would give scientists clues about life during the epoch of the dinosaurs.

Peretti, the author of the above Magnificent Green emerald book, didin’t decide to do the search; a decision was not necessary- - his nerdy scientific fascination drove him to do it! He’s a scientist first and foremost. Peretti mobilized the entire communities of several towns in northern Myanmar to bring every sample found of this special amber. For months he inspected, analized and purchased the promising pieces. His laboratory sorted and polished amber pieces and published results. Other scientists were consulted and finally the one-in-a-million piece turned up – it had the skull of an unknown amphibian lizard. His persistence gained him credit for this rare find. It was given the name Yaksha Peretti.

Adolf formed the Perettii Museum Foundation to assist and support children who have been negatively impacted by local mining projects in Madagascar and Burma as well as towns in the Himalayas. He has even supported a Clayhands program of assistence to 80 young boys of Colombia. The Museum, located in Switzerland, is safeguarding one of the most important amber collections in the world, including various life forms dating back to the age of the dinosaurs, among them the Yaksha Peretti."
