Crooked River limb casts

Post by rocks2dust »

These are found in the hills to the south of the South Fork Crooked River in Crook County, Oregon. They come in pink, green, blue, yellow and white/colorless. The pinks, pieces with dendrites and those with iris phenomena are sometime cut into gems. Limb casts form in the voids left by trees that were buried by volcanic ash. Some are completely filled with agate (and occasionally jasper or opal), others are only partially filled (occasionally with permineralized wood remnants). I've seen some fairly bizarre pieces from this area.

Nice dendrites all through this piece

I like the partially filled pieces
