Opal pseudomorphs explained

Post by SwordfishMining »

Thanks to IDUCuriosity and the Australian Opal Center in Lightning ridge for further show and tell about opal replacements. In Virgin Valley at less than 16 MYA to 10 MYA plus, our woods are identifiable using modern wood ID books for the genus. Species are extremely hard to define even with a good parallel, horizontal and 45 degree angled polished thin sections to examine under a 100 to 1000 power microscope.

There are several wood identification groups in facebook and other forums that can help if you care to research your specimen. I have been lucky to have the two top US experts on Virgin Valley species in the past buying from me and giving me some free IDs. Swordfish Mining has also supplied scientists examining how opal is even formed in woods and been published. I've shared those pictures before in the Virgin Valley Opal (NOT MINES) group for all to enjoy.
