Fossil wood containing silver

Post by rocks2dust »

In only a very few places have been found wood that has been replaced by precious metal. In the case of these pieces from northern New Mexico, conifer wood was replaced by silver and copper. It makes for very heavy specimens. I've no intention of cutting the pieces I bought. Although some of it is fragile, other parts are solid metal and might be worthy of cutting gemstones. Definitely the strangest petrified wood I've come across.
