A recent independent study has proven the long-supported anecdotal evidence of platinum’s outstanding wear resistance and gem setting security. In this hour-long webinar, Teresa Frye, owner of TechForm Advanced Casting and Ulrich Klotz, head of fem’s (Germany’s Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metals Chemistry) Department of Physical Metallurgy, will discuss the study in greater detail.

In this webinar, you’ll learn more about the research project’s major findings, including the underlying reasons for platinum’s exceptional wear resistance and the measured differences in performance of platinum alloys.

PANELISTS:

Teresa Frye: The owner and president of TechForm Advanced Casting Technology, Frye’s firm introduced high-temperature casting methods from the aerospace industry to platinum manufacturing in the early 90’s. A leading expert on shell casting methods and a prolific researcher, she has published technical papers and articles worldwide. Her publications have appeared in the Johnson Matthey Technology Review, The Santa Fe Symposium on Jewelry Manufacturing Technology, The Jewelry Technology Forum, MJSA Journal, and JCK Magazine, among others. She has also presented her research at numerous venues across the globe.

Ulrich Klotz studied Physical Metallurgy at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and earned his PhD from The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, Switzerland. From 1999 to 2007 he worked at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (Empa) in Dübendorf, Switzerland. Since 2007 he is Head of the Department of Physical Metallurgy at the fem, Germany. fem is the Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metals Chemistry. Since 1922 the fem is the world’s only independent Institute for Precious Metals Research. Ulrich’s research interests are thermodynamics and phase diagrams and processing technology including investment casting and additive manufacturing of precious metals alloys.
