great first time :!: IMHO shoulders of opal need rounded down and sides polished.

Agree with 8's. The sharp edge at the top is asking to be chipped.

It's not bad at all, and it looks like you shaped it pretty well, so just rounding out those sharp edges should finish it up nicely. Why do you consider it a failure? :?:

Yes.. I have successfully polished low domed white opal.. do I need to remove the potch opal backing or just leave it as 'stabilizer'. :-)

May I make a suggestion? Get some thing glass and practice the stroke method to turn the flat glass into a shallow dome. This skill works great with triplets and would work well with you are doing. Going to see if I can find a video reference. I learned it from Sarah Lee Boyce at William Holland School of Lapidary Arts in NE Georgia (USA).
