That's new to me, too, and I don't think I've been out of the loop, but I'm sitting next to a lunatic these days so you probably shouldn't go by me.

Based on what we're seeing in the pic, my first inclination would be to think they are lab created. :?

Wait a second, doesn't "all" opal come in pre-formed slabs?
Maybe I can tile my bathroom or kitchen back splash with this stuff.

I've seen those sheets and thought the same thing, Chris. Great minds and all that.

I also thought how fun it would be to carve opal fingernails out of them. There are some pretty wild ones out there now, but opal nails would be the prettiest.

Why does nobody think they can't have matrix opal also? Further investigation is called for. I do a kitchen in it if it was as tough as granite LOL or had no ash to wash out.

Hiya 8s. That looks like a boulder pattern in an opal, but if it was man made, I'd say they chopped their scrap up and put it back in the tank to make a breccia opal trying to break up the monotonous pattern, but the pieces would still look like pieces in new opal of different color or pattern. The skill in mixing etc is coming along by leaps and bounds. We have not seen the end of new mining districts in opal either.

We would need to be able to see deeper into the stone to see whether the structure looks normal, or like stacked colors. ;)
