Rsedawie wrote:While it is an amazing opal sadly this is not the first time the world has seen it. It is called the "sea of opal" and it is in the guiness world record books as the biggest black opal in the world. It has been shown at many shows around the worls includinh the Changsha gem show.

Good luck with the promotion hopefully someone gives this opal some more spotlight.

mate if you have pics of it previously mafe public, feel free to post them.

the point of the post is these are the first published pics of this Opal.

Id love it to e the one you mention, add to the intrigue.

However, you say it is the same as the one in Guiness Book which has no pic. However, you failed to notice that the size recorded there is not correct as you can see, now having seen the Opal for the first time yourself. So your story needs to be verified, to see if it is the same Opal.

I wondered about that since he left no link to prove his claim, so thanks mick. I'm interested to see if he can back it up, so show us some proof please Ross. If the weight in Guinness is not the same as this one I don't see how it could be the same specimen, but I'm open to seeing pics to verify it.

And if it's not the same specimen, if you have pics of this one in Guinness it would be wonderful to see it, too. That's very odd that Guinness has no pics of it. :!:

I found this: https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22395/lot/1107/

And I dropped our link in the comments on the Guinness site.

Thanks KJ. I sure enjoyed looking at the rest of the opals for sale in that auction.

Somethingis not right here as this shows incorrect measurements, Guiness would not make such mistakes.

Google, how many feet is 2,540mm..

Yes, that's very strange, and I can't imagine them getting the measurements wrong either, and even if they did, I would think they would make a correction if it was brought to their attention, so maybe they're not aware that there's a question about the discrepancy in the claims about the dimensions.

I pulled up a metric conversion table and here are the results:
2450mm= 8ft 0.4566931in
1460mm= 4ft 9.480315in
527mm= 1ft 8.748032in

Now that I can actually relate to the measurements, that thing is an astounding size! :shock: :o

It's been a while since we've used Imperial measurements, but 96 inches has got to be wrong as well. We saw the picture of the opal being held; it is certainly not 96 inches. (A yard is 36 inches, right?)

I'm thinking 9.645 x 5.748 x 2.074 inches, which is more in line with the photo.

That was my take on it until I saw those Guinness measurements translated to feet. It makes no sense because an 8'+ X 4'+ X 1'+ isn't going to fit in anyone's hand, but I can't figure out how Guinness' dimensions could be stated incorrectly both in millimeters and in inches, since 96.45" is still over 8'. I'm mystified as to how this could be so screwed up by Guinness, but maybe someone ought to fill them in on it so they can measure it again and get the right stats up. :lol:
