Re: Gemstone Treatments

Apparently they're finding waterglass and fibers in rough now, in quite a few types of gemstones. Are we surprised? NOT! :?

Re: Gemstone Treatments

Sigh, there's never an end to the reading I have to do. For what it's worth I looked at and decided not to buy a CiGem unit. Sadly, one gets what one pays for in this life and this unit does not seem to me to be a serious investigative tool. I started with CiGem in my own search for a spectrometer,...

Re: Gemstone Treatments

Gemlab's final 2012 newsletter touches on some new gemstone treatments I hadn't even heard of before. It's getting to the point where the neighborhood gemologist won't be able to tell if stones are treated without investing in very expensive equipment. For anyone going to Tucson who wants the GL Gem...

Re: Gemstone Treatments

Another one to watch out for. I pulled this from another forum I'm on: "They are filling the emeralds with ExCel polymer and offering a lifetime guarantee against change. The Guarantee states: Eternity Natural Emerald's® ExCelT is a stable process for enhancing the clarity of emeralds. Emeralds...

Re: Gemstone Treatments

More from Ron's site, that's well worth the read: COUNTING FISSURES TO DETERMINE THE DEGREE OF ENHANCEMENT IN EMERALDS "After counting fissures on hundreds of emeralds, a close relationship (1:1) was found between surface-reaching fissures and the degree of face-up clarity enhancement..." m

Re: Gemstone Treatments

Emerald expert Ron Ringsrud, owner of m, says the ongoing debate in the emerald industry about whether or not filling rough and preformed emeralds is causing a major problem, is of little concern in the larger Colombian emerald picture. The practice of filling emeralds before cutting can allow some ...

Re: Gemstone Treatments

What happens with all the insurance policies issued on the millions of carats of Asian red andesine jewelry that the labs erroneously verified as natural and untreated, that is now verified as artificially treated beyond a shadow of a doubt, and that consumers have been paying premiums on based on t...

Gemstone Treatments

The old ways of observational gemology have had to give way to the more advanced method of experimental gemology , to keep up with new treatments being discovered seemingly one right after the other lately, even in stones we don't expect to be treated. This is a well thought out assessment of what's...

Re: Oregon Sunstone

Hi Pink, If you want some just let me know as I go down to the mines every year. They are only 6 hours away, and I have known Don for a few years now. My daughter lives just on the other side of Lakeview, so we go sunstone hunting as a family trip every year in the "free" areas, and then ...
