Re: Avatar
I had difficulty too, but when I changed the extension to .jpg, and got the file size below - I think it's 6k-whatever for the max, it finally accepted the pic I wanted. Even if your dimensions are 90x90, it also has to be below that other size number. I'm so dumb when it comes to computers I don't ...

Re: Trade Alert on Zultanite
Yes, I had a ring that I got from a jeweler I worked for that was marked smoky topaz, but later I was told it was smoky quartz. I never recall the jeweler's gemologist or setters testing pieces that came in from his regular suppliers, so I can easily understand how that could happen now, even though...

Opal Mining at Lightning Ridge
Lee Atkinson revels in the wacky ways of Lightning Ridge, where the stories get bigger with every beer. "There must be something in the (bore) water at Lightning Ridge that brings out the eccentric in everyone. Or maybe it's just that normal rules don't seem to apply in this place where weird ...

Re: Quartz: Is it real, or is it Memorex?
You are absolutely correct about the synthetic quartz being everywhere, as I noted in the quartz article: "Most natural quartz tries to form more than one crystal in the same space; a phenomenon known as Brazil Law Twinning, that becomes visible under crossed polars, and renders most natural ma...

Re: Quartz: Is it real, or is it Memorex?
Synthetic quartz is flooded all over the market as natural, sadly! I won't even buy the rough anymore unless is shows some crystal shape to it or from very trusted sources(very few). Just not worth it! Aside from hydrothermally grown synthetic quartz, there is also something called fused quartz(aka...

Re: Quartz: Is it real, or is it Memorex?
There has been an alert regarding some of the citrine being found on the market that a colleague of mine on another forum has kindly allowed me to quote: Gearloose wrote: "Over the years I suppose people have been amused by my Fake Quartz rants. They were genuine. An issue has come up in the la...

Quartz: Is it real, or is it Memorex?
Those old enough will know which word I changed so I could use that phrase in this thread's title! A great deal of quartz changes hands every day, and as we all know, a gem's journey from the miner to the end buyer is fraught with perils all the way, and you never know when they will fall into the h...
